Hepatitis C Surveillance

The hepatitis C virus (HCV) is one of the most important causes of chronic liver disease in the United States. It accounts for:

• 20% of acute viral hepatitis cases
• 60 - 70% of chronic hepatitis cases
• 30% of cirrhosis, end-stage liver disease, and liver cancer.
• 1.8% of U.S. population has antibodies to HCV (indicating ongoing or previous infection with the virus)
• 8,000 to 10,000 deaths annually in the United States.
